A week in the life of a Sumo

TL;DR: We're hiring. You'd love working with us. Apply here.

It’s the Monday after Thanksgiving so I can guarantee 98% of you weren’t looking forward to work today.

You’re probably still hungover from turkey, and the last thing you want to do is sit in a bunch of dumb meetings and be bored out of your mind.

But I couldn’t WAIT to get back to the Sumo office.

Why? Here’s a typical week for me:

9:45 AM on Monday I hop on my motorized longboard and ride to the office downtown. It’s only 5 minutes, and damn Austin has beautiful weather.

10 AM on Monday is our weekly team meeting. That’s the only required meeting (other than happy hour on Friday).

We start off with some light calisthenics and stretching. Next is our weekly updates. Noah shares how we’re doing towards our yearly goal, and we read through what everyone else is working on and ask any questions.

Well, that was easy and drama-free. Now let’s get to work!

My desk is nice and simple. Just a large monitor, mouse, and keyboard that I plug my Macbook Air into.

Robert and Jamie use crazy 5 monitor combinations, Mark has a huge iMac he uses for design work, Ayman just uses his Macbook. Basically, you do you.

After the meeting, I talk with people on the biz/marketing team to go over my progress with what I’m working on.

It’s not so they can tell me what to do, it’s so I can tell them what I’m doing. Basically… you’re your own boss.

Tuesday, I finalize a big guest post and Anton shares it with the team on Slack. Damn it feels good getting that recognition at times :)

On Wednesday, we do Tiny Team lunches where people from different teams get together to catch up with what’s going on over some delicious food.

On Thursday, it’s a nice day, so I message the team that I’ll be “WFH” (Working From Home) and go work from Mozart’s coffee shop by the lake:

You get to work from wherever you want. The important thing is that the work gets done.

Then on Friday, Sumo Happy Hour starts at 5:30 PM sharp courtesy of our CTO / Mixologist Chad. No Miller Lites here, Chad makes insane drinks, every single Friday:

SumoMe Bar

That sounds like a nice week, right?

But … I didn’t even tell you about the best part.

That whole time, whether I was working from the office or by the lake … I was working on something HUGE. There's no doubt in my mind that we'll be a $100 million company in a few years.

Something that over 200,000+ sites use every day, is seen by millions of people, and is changing the Internet.

I’m insanely lucky to be where I am. I work on an amazing product (that I also use on my own sites), have direct input into what we’re doing, and have ridiculous flexibility and benefits.

Oh, and you may be thinking that with all our crazy benefits, we’re probably cooped up working like slaves (looking at you Amazon).

Nope.

I work from 10:30 - 6:30, Monday through Friday. And that’s because I like taking time to exercise and read in the morning :)

When I get home, I don’t have to toil away at the computer right after scarfing down dinner. I get to go out for dinner, do some of my own writing, work on my latest kombucha brew, whatever I feel like.

If we’re pushing out something big, I may hop on later to finish some work. But that’s because I want to.

That's a typical week, but this upcoming one is bit different. We’re all going to Mexico for one of numerous yearly company trips. We even took a private jet to Vegas in January :-O

I love working at SumoMe--how could I not? And you’d love working with us too.

The good news is we’re hiring. But we only hire the best.

If you think you’re good enough to work with us, apply right now.

Like Sheryl Sandberg says: “If you're offered a seat on a rocket ship, get on.”

The hatch is open. The fuel tank is full. Noah’s piloting. This thing is going to Mars.

Are you getting on?

Apply for one of our openings now.

P.S. It may take us a little to get back to you since we’ll be sipping margaritas in Puerto Vallarta. Hope you can join for the next trip!
