At the start of this year, I set a goal: double Sumo’s email list.
And in four months, we doubled it (from 3k to 6k emails PER MONTH):
Here's the strategy I used to collect all those emails:
These are links to bonus upgrades for every piece of content we create.
Here’s what my Click Trigger form looks like:
I link to it in four strategic places inside Sumo blog posts:
Underneath the headline as "Bonus Material."
The top 30% of the blog post.
The bottom 30% of the blog post.
Inside the meat of the content.
This is a full screen mat new visitors see when they first visit a blog post. It offers the same bonus "upgrade" as above.
Here’s what my Welcome Mat looks like:
I have a mat for the top 50 organic traffic posts on the blog.
I only show it on desktop devices (because Google can ding you if you show it on mobile). I also add a "Don't Show" rule for anyone already coming from an email link inside a Sumo email.
This is a popup shown when someone tries to exit a blog post.
I looked at our top 20 organic traffic posts in Google Analytics and added exit popups on the posts. To find these posts I go to Google Analytics > Behavior > Site Content > All Pages.
I use the same bonus "upgrade" as above. I only change the copy on the headline of the form from "Almost there!" to "Before you go!" to match the behavior of the visitor, like this:
Using this simple three-step strategy…
We now collect over 10,000 emails EVERY month on the Sumo blog.
If you know the value of an email list, you can build a really nice business off that.
